Chapter 26

Matt Flowers stood resolutely behind the lectern at the Palm Springs Presbyterian Church, eyes wet with tears, grief stricken. He had just flown in from Europe for Poppy’s funeral the night before, although he had been alerted of her tragic death just hours before boarding the plane. The pews of the church were filled with friends and acquaintances of the beloved late actress. Her core group of confidantes, Iris and Violet, huddled together in the front row, holding on to each other for emotional support. Poppy’s daughter, Heather, sat at the end of the row, dabbing her face with tissues, having just arrived from New York, where she attends law school, early that morning. Across the aisle sat Detective Jordan and his wife, Lynn, heads bowed, grieving.

Matt, who was halfway through with his remarks, stopped speaking and gazed over at the closed casket with a copper finish, rather pricey, but Matt had insisted that no expense be spared. “Many will remember Poppy for her work in television as an actress. Through her portrayal of Daphne in the Jack Colt show, millions of Americans and people around the world welcomed her into their home every week, they felt as if they knew her personally, that she was one of the family. The character of Daphne was warm, friendly, empathetic, loyal to a fault, willing to do anything for her employer, like go undercover as a go-go dancer to catch a strangler in one memorable episode, or risk her own life protecting a battered child from his abusive father in an episode that garnered a Golden Globe nomination for best supporting actress in a television series for the actress who portrayed her. And like her indelible role of Daphne, Poppy Harmon, the actress, the person, was also warm, friendly, empathetic, and loyal. And she was so much more. . . .” There was a catch in his throat as he choked up. He paused, waited until he managed to get himself under control, and then slowly continued. “Most people who discover their late spouse left them penniless might give up, wallow in the hopelessness of her wretched circumstances, but not Poppy. She got back up, brushed herself off, and reinvented herself as a private investigator. And a truly successful one at that. That is how she touched so many lives, beyond her acting career, with her innate kindness, her unshakable sense of justice, her tenacious drive to help people who have been wronged. She was my role model. . . .” Matt sniffed. He reached into the pocket of his suit coat for a handkerchief and rubbed his runny nose. Matt peered out at the grim-faced, solemn crowd of mourners dressed in black, and squeaked out, “I will miss her every day for the rest of my life.”

And then he lost it. He covered his face with the handkerchief, his whole body heaving as he wept, and then he stepped down, squeezing in between Iris and Violet in the front pew as they comforted him like two overprotective aunts.
